… or how to lift company morale from your sofa?
The situation in the world due to the risk of infection with COVID-19 virus is something that most of us have never faced yet. Quarantine, military, police hour, we hear these words every day, so home from work doesn’t really sound that bad, does it? Ok we all hate the long lines in supermarkets, and we are all wondering why is there a shortage of toilet paper? Well I must say that work from home, while there is no toilet paper in the house, could represent some problems, as do other things. Lack of concentration, lack of motivation, cooking lunch instead of working, cleaning the house instead of working. But there are also benefits. You cannot be late for work if you are working from home for example. You can also get very comfortable, while working on you couch, you have extra time because you don’t have to drive to work.
However, to bring some seriousness in our process, we can help with daily meetings or video conferences, which can be done with programs such as Skype, Zoom etc.
When working remotely (especially on days when self-isolation is recommended), co-workers are usually losing the emotional component of work. No more talks about sports, no more laughs about reality shows, no more pranks from office joker… these are the things that connect the team and improve the climate in the company.
People who are not used to work from home, may experience even bigger problems. How to keep focus, because everyone in my family also have to work from home? Where will I find some peace and quiet?
Let’s face it. In times like this, productivity cannot be the highest. It doesn’t need to be. The whole world has stopped. So that gives some extra time, doesn’t it? Now let’s transform this extra time into fun time. We have prepared a few tips for you how to do something for your team to lift the morale and make your very own virtual team building. First question is, what do we need? The answer would be Skype, Google docs and a little creativity.
What is remote team building?
Remote or virtual teambuilding can be as simple as playing online games with your friends. You need to be in touch with them, have a good time and get a result out of it. With tools that we know, this is very easy. In ETC Adriatic, we have decided, to come up with a few suggestions for virtual teambuilding that are easy to organize and fun to be a part of. It will only take some creativity, and you are good to go. And who knows, maybe this will become your new “casual Friday” routine.
3 simple virtual team-building games
To organize there VTB activities, it is enough to open a conference call with your coworkers via Skype or Zoom and have team members use Google docs or similar, to work in groups. Nothing new, right? If you have other tools in your business that you already use, that’s even better.
5 things in common
Divide the team into small groups and ask them to come up with a list of 5 things they have in common. Co-Workers should use a shared document or a whiteboard to quickly create a list. If you wish to keep the game more professional, limit your coworkers to topics that are work related.
Common things can be very simple starting from “I work from home because of Corona virus” to more specific like we have the same name. The answers will show your associates the things that they have in common and it will create a bond, encourage discussion and laughter, and get creative thinking in the group. Each group will that have to share their common things with others groups, and it will create a positive and joyful atmosphere that is appropriate for extra effort…and as always… a pinch of humor is the ingredient that makes the difference, so give your company joker some room to lift the house.
If your team is scattered all over Europe, it is always a good idea to look at the location where your employees come from. And why not ask them to prepare a short presentation about their region? They can show you the main tourist attractions of the place, hidden corners, which only locals know, tell you something about gastronomy, secret recipes, pictures of celebrities that live nearby… Who knows maybe a lot of you will get an idea for summer a trip to that region? What do we gain out of it? Your co-workers will share their stories, and stories of their city, others will get to know co-workers background, and will get more chances to connect on a higher level… plus you can get some ideas what to cook for lunch.
“Mi casa es tu casa”
As the flow of life is accelerating, it is likely that group members will never take time and invite each other for a coffee in their homes. However, this does not mean that they cannot open their apartments to each other. Following the model of the MTV Cribs show, we open the door to our colleagues and show them the apartment online. You can brag which closed you have made yourself, which room will you repaint and what you would do better than the architect who designed your kitchen. This game provides an interesting look into the personal lives of co-workers and is also a fun way to get to know the whole team better… Just don’t forget to clean your apartment first 😊
Why organize virtual team building?
Isolation is a downside to remote work. This can lead to termination of work and, consequently, to poor performance. Team building activities help your team build social bonds, combat loneliness and improve communication. These days, when we are forced to work from home and there is widespread nervousness in the world, we can bring some relaxation to our company and organize not only remote work but a fun team building distance work for our colleagues.
